Its two-point equidistant projection, centred on New York and San Francisco, suppresses political geography so cables, radio circuits, factories, laboratories and telephone concessions appear as one global organism. It depicts a hybrid order of submarine and land cables, radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony—not a single seamless network. I.T.\u0026amp;T.’s distinction was exceptional reach and vertical integration, combining research, manufacture, international transmission and foreign operating companies. It was not globally dominant by market share: AT\u0026amp;T controlled American telephony, Cable \u0026amp; Wireless commanded an imperial network, and national systems remained state monopolies. Broken lines, Postal Telegraph’s merger into Western Union and the sold Romanian and Spanish systems reveal retrenchment.
