The key identifies the residence of the ruling Pasha, the Citadel, Janissary and Assab quarters, Sultan Hasan, al-Azhar, Khan al-Khalili, the Jewish quarter, foreign consulates, churches, cemeteries, birkets, bridges and industrial sites. Niebuhr’s plan was made from pacing and compass observations, giving it the character of a working traveller’s survey rather than a decorative city view. It is a rich record of eighteenth-century Cairo’s political, religious, commercial and hydraulic geography.
