Compiled from the Board of Trade register for the year ended 30 June 1895, each black dot pinpoints a shipping casualty—not simply a wreck or total loss—while boat emblems locate the Institution’s lifeboats. Dense concentrations around the English Channel, Thames estuary, East Anglian sands, Humber, Mersey and Bristol Channel make the geography of risk immediately visible; an inset covers Shetland and Orkney. The printed summary records 4,917 vessels lost or damaged, including cases of minor damage, and 740 lives lost. The accompanying analysis counted 1,688 collisions and noted that only 38 of those who died were passengers, the remainder officers and crew; it states that the chart showed 298 Institution lifeboats.
