TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'A view of the Antient Manor House of Fawkeshall or Vauxhall, Surrey'

The picture at the top shows the Vauxhall Manor House as it was in 1644. The fascinating map at the bottom shows the area at the time of publication. The site of the Manor House is marked as being close to the site of the then "intended Vauxhall Bridge" in the top centre of the map. The present MI6 headquarters would be sited to the right (north east) of the bridge, on the site of what was then a "Vinegar manufactory", and very close to the site of the Manor House. On the left (to the south west) of the intended location of Vauxhall Bridge are the Cumberland Gardens and Hope Wharf - the current site of the recent St George's Wharf development. Wandsworth Road runs of the left hand edge of the map. Also marked on the map are The Royal Oak pub, the Vauxhall Brewery, Tea Rooms, the Turnpike, Nunns Stables, the Vauxhall Pottery, The George and Dragon Pub, the Watermans Houses, and Messrs Johnson & Co.

DATE PRINTED: The date of publication stated on the title page of the volume within which the print was published was 1819. The publication date printed on the sheet itself is 11th October 1813. However, evidence from elsewhere in the volume suggests that this was printed in the 1834 second edition.
