Some Background Information about the Prints and Some of the Illustrators

The prints in this work are of a high quality. They express the environment most frequented by the dog depicted. For example the King Charles Spaniels are in a rich environment giving the impression that they are pampered pets. Whereas the working dogs (e.g: Turnspit and Esquimaux Dogs) are pictured in the general environment in which they work, or are native. (kitchen, Arctic).

WILLIAM BARRAUD was a sporting artist. His Brother Henry was also an artist as was his nephew, Francis.

PHILIP REINAGLE RA(1749-1833) was a sporting artist and animal painter. Born in Scotland, he moved to London c.1749 in order to enter the Royal Academy Schools. He later studied with Allan Ramsay. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1787 and then a member in 1812. He died whilst still in London.

Examples of Philip Reinagle's work can also be found in the following publications: Sportsman's Cabinet - 1803; Sexual System of Linnaeus - 1799-1807 and Philosophy of Botany - 1809-10.
