Cemal Nadir Güler (1902–1947) was Turkey’s most influential political cartoonist of the early twentieth century and a pioneering force in modern Turkish satire. Renowned for his newspaper work and his creation of the popular character “Amcabey,” Güler combined sharp political observation with humour, elegance, and a gift for visual symbolism. During the Second World War he became particularly noted for his anti-Nazi cartoons, boldly critiquing Axis aggression at a time when Turkey maintained official neutrality. Among his most inventive works were his serio-comic maps, which transformed wartime geography into satirical allegory: collapsing fronts became toppling figures, borders twisted under pressure, and national characters embodied the shifting balance of power. These maps vividly illustrated the disintegration of Axis influence in the Mediterranean and Europe, offering Turkish readers both commentary and moral clarity. Güler’s wartime maps remain landmark examples of political cartography and an enduring testament to his anti-fascist voice.
