A fascinating history - starting from the
Discovery of the Bahamas by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and including chapters
on:-
Original inhabitants - Buccaneers - First Settlements - Loyalists and the
Blockade Runners during the American Civil War -
The Out Islands (now called the Family Islands) - Negroes and Slavery -
Commerce, agriculture, sponge fisheries...
It begins with a chapter on how to reach New
Providence, at the time Nassau had some 12.000 inhabitants. A Steamer from
Montreal cost $ 35 one way, round trip $ 50. From New York by Ward Line the
Saloon fare was $ 40 one way, $ 70 return.
The luxurious Hotel Colonial, as it was then known, cost $ 5 a day, upwards !
