A fascinating history - starting from the Discovery of the Bahamas by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and including chapters on:-
Original inhabitants - Buccaneers - First Settlements - Loyalists and the Blockade Runners during the American Civil War -
The Out Islands (now called the Family Islands) - Negroes and Slavery - Commerce, agriculture, sponge fisheries...

It begins with a chapter on how to reach New Providence, at the time Nassau had some 12.000 inhabitants. A Steamer from
Montreal cost $ 35 one way, round trip $ 50. From New York by Ward Line the Saloon fare was $ 40 one way, $ 70 return.
The luxurious Hotel Colonial, as it was then known, cost $ 5 a day, upwards !
