Some Background Information about the Prints and Some of the Illustrators
This work contains prints of a high standard and a quality that can only be achieved through the process of steel engraving. The prints portray various parts of Lancashire, from industrial areas to the surrounding countryside. Many stately homes are also portrayed. The way of life of the people is expressed within the Towns and Cities.
The Cities of Liverpool and Manchester are expressed extensively, some of the images are of specific streets and others of landmarks. These would be interesting to compare with the same places today considering how these cities have expanded. The images shown below are town plans of Liverpool and Manchester in different time periods from Illustrations, History, Directory and Gazetteer of the County Palatine of Lancaster - 1824-5. These show the growth of Liverpool and Manchester until 1824/5.
Please click on the images below to view larger versions which will express the expansion of the cities.

THOMAS ALLOM (1804-1872) was a Topographical Illustrator and Architect. He was born in London, England and in 1819 he was apprenticed to the architect Francis Goodwin. Allom was a founder member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He produced designs for buildings in London and carried them out himself as well as working with the architect Sir Charles Barry on numerous projects. He produced many illustrations for publications of the topographical nature in the mid 1800s including: Devonshire and Cornwall Illustrated and The Fashionable guide and Directory to the Public Places of Resort Illustrated with Views. Allom died at the age of 68 in Barnes, London, England.
SAMUEL AUSTIN OWS (1796-1834) was a topographer and watercolourist. He was born in Liverpool. He was first employed as a bank clerk until he learnt to draw by taking instruction from Peter de Wint. He then painted abundantly in North Wales, Lancashire, Holland, Belgium and Normandy. Along with Clarkson Stanfield and others Austin was a founder member of the Society of British Artists. He was elected Associate to the Old Watercolourist Society in 1827 and a full member in 1834, immediately before he died.
Austin's work can also be found in the following publication: Views in the East - 1833
JOHN HARWOOD (fl.1818-1829) was a landscape and architectural illustrator. He worked in London. In this work Harwood shows great attention to detail. He includes in his images all of the signs for shops and other businesses, so that we have a record of the locations of such places.
