Some Background Information about the prints
These small prints are highly coloured, yet delicate and therefore very attractive to behold. Their detail is exquisite, each feather being depicted, some subtly and others being outlined in black. Those outlined in black do not appear to 'fit in' with the overall picture that they occupy. For example, the Polish Banthams: In this print there are seven birds that have the feathers shown with a delicate use of colour and two that appear flat in comparison. It appears as though a second person has drawn them into the image prior to printing, someone who has little knowledge of the use of colour and not the artist (Edwin Megargee) who originally painted them. This becomes more obvious when the print is studied further and black is only used as a tonal tool except in this circumstance. Luckily there are only a couple of prints displaying this.
The most striking example of the well constructed composition of these prints is that of the peacock (or pea fowl as it is described on the print) whose tail feathers trail down against a white wall which emphasizes the colour and complexity of the tail itself as well as expressing the proud demeanor of this magnificent bird.
The variety of poultry portrayed is extensive, as this book was originally intended for use by students studying this particular field. It is interesting to observe them in such different environments.
