Some Background Information about John Senex
JOHN SENEX (fl.1690-1740) Was an engraver, publisher, surveyor and geographer to Queen Anne. He teamed up with James Maxwell and Charles Price early in the 18th century to produce some admirable maps of the world and continents including loose maps of many countries. In 1719 he issued a miniature, updated edition of Ogilby's 'Brittannia'. This publication went through many editions and was inspired by the great interest he seemed to show in road maps.
The most interesting aspect of this particular edition, is the depiction of California as an island in 'USA AMERICAS' and 'A New and Correct Map of the World ' rather than as part of the mainland of the United States. At the time this was believed to be the case and many maps showed this, including maps by JOHN SPEED. These interesting cartographic inaccuracies increase the appeal of these maps.
John Senex' publications include:
'A New Map of
Great Britain', c.1710.
'Atlas' (20 maps published without title), 1711.
'Map of Ireland', 1712.
'The English Atlas', 1714.
'An Actual Survey of all the Principal Roads of England and
Wales', 1719 (re-issued frequently until c.1775, including a
French Edition in 1766.)
'A New General Atlas of the World' (small folio), 1721.
'Hertfordshire' (re-issue of Norden's map, originally
published in 1593-98), 1723.
