Some Background Information about the Prints and W. H. BARTLETT

The prints in this book illustrate the picturesque views of Switzerland, showing the relative culture of the peoples as well as the Mountains, which are abundant in Switzerland, and are a major part of this work. The form of the mountains is clearly seen in the prints as are the snow caps, and the precarious walkways between them.

The animals that are farmed are mainly goats although there are sheep also, and it seems that the goatherds frequent the mountains and valleys. The goats appear to be a major part of the way of life of the Swiss, they are not only present in the wilderness, but in the towns and villages also.

This book has a certain reference to military activity, showing the difficulty in travelling along the mountain passes, this print shows that the unexpected avalanches can prove to be perilous for those caught in their path.

WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (1809-1854) was a topographical illustrator who was articled to John Britton. He travelled in 1830, visiting Syria, Egypt, Palestine and America. He died on this voyage around the world, at sea at the tender age of 45 years.
