Some Background Information about this work and the Illustrator: W. H. BARTLETT
This book was written in the early 19th century due to the demand of civilized Europe to see this part of the world. The illustrations depict the culture of Turkey and the magnificence of the architecture, the intricately decorative quality that is usually only seen in old buildings. The covered street scenes, or Tchartchi, show that the people are more active inside than they are out in the hot climate. There are even such places as cooling rooms, that are intended for people to escape the heat. There is a variety of traditional dress, many of the people are wearing turbans and the women are covered from head-to-toe, there are also people in loose fitting trousers and tasselled hats.
The animals that are farmed are generally goats and oxen. The oxen are used to pull carts and mules also seem to be common. The much needed aqueducts are magnificent and their immensity is shown by the mounted figures that are below them. Generally the images listed below are very interesting, especially to those who are fascinated by the cultures of the world, or enjoy looking at beautiful architecture.
WILLIAM HENRY BARTLETT (1809-1854) was a topographical illustrator who was articled to John Britton. He travelled in 1830, visiting Syria, Egypt, Palestine and America. He died on this voyage around the world, at sea at the tender age of 45 years.
