THE SHORT LIVED STATE OF FRANKLIN
Named after the Statesman Benjamin Franklin, the State of Franklin had a limited existence (1784-1788). It was in November 1784 that Federal leaders decided to have a convention to form the State of Franklin, which was never really recognized.
Originally Franklin was a piece of land that was part of North Carolina. It was difficult to protect and was therefore offered to the Federal government on June 2nd 1784. This offer was withdrawn on 20th November 1784, at which time the State of Franklin was founded. It consisted of the counties Sullivan, Washington and Green and was governed by John Sevier and the government of North Carolina.
The State collapsed in 1788 when John Sevier was arrested. It became part of Tennessee by 1796 when Sevier became its governor and Tennessee became part of the Union.
