Kitchin, Thomas

Thomas Kitchin (or Kitchen) (1718-1784) was an English engraver and cartographer. He was born in Southwark, and was apprenticed to Emmanuel Bowen in 1732, with whom he collaborated for 30 years. He was appointed Hydrographer to the King in 1773. His large and varied output has been attributed to his willingness to copy the maps of other cartographers. He worked for a number of publishers including Dalrymple, Dunn, Luttrell, Mackenzie & Wildey. He produced John Elphinstone's map of Scotland (1745). He contributed maps to Astley's New General Collection of Voyages and Travels (1746). He collaborated on The Small English Atlas (issued 1749-1787) with Thomas Jefferys. He worked with Bowen on The Large English Atlas (1749-60), and The Royal English Atlas (1762-1828). He produced 170 maps for The London Magazine . Later works included Kitchin’s Pocket Atlas (1769) and Kitchin’s English Atlas (1770).
