Brown, Alfred Samler

Alfred Samler Brown (1859-1936) was a travel guide writer specialising in the Macaronesian islands, South and East Africa. His popular guidebook Madeira, Canary Islands and the Azores which ran to its 14th edition by 1932, was responsible for promoting British tourism to the archipelago; he lived in the Canaries. He also edited the Guide to South Africa, first published in the 1890s or earlier, which in later editions morphed into the South and East African Year Book.
