19th-century town and city plans on both sides of the Atlantic lead this week’s selection. Beers’s 1875 atlas of Middlesex County, Massachusetts, captures the streets and property ownership of historic towns including Lexington and Concord, where the American Revolution began. We’ve replenished our catalogue of Dawson’s 1832 Reform Act maps, charting the redrawn parliamentary boundaries as reform abolished rotten boroughs and gave growing industrial towns a voice. London’s 1852 spring-water scheme was an ambitious plan to pipe pure water from Watford after the devastating cholera epidemic of 1848–49. Ruggieri’s Grand Tour-era Florence was the standard map of the city for over a century. Our plan of Imperial Vienna shows the newly regulated Danube and the city just before its great suburban expansion, while County Mayo’s handsome survey index map traces Ireland’s Atlantic coast. Robert Morden’s maps of 1700 range from Barbados and Brazil to the Caucasus and Maldives. For the first time in several years, we’ve sourced a selection of Saville-Kent’s wonderful Great Barrier Reef prints, adding a final colourful flourish of vivid fish, anemones and corals.
