Covens & Mortier, Jean/Johannes & Corneille/Cornelis

Covens and Mortier were an important eighteenth century Amsterdam cartographic publishing house. Their output included reissues of atlases by de l'Isle, Visscher, Sanson and de Wit whose stock they purchased. Cornelis Mortier had succeeded to the business of his father Pierre Mortier in 1711. He subsequently married the sister of Johannes Covens in 1721 and in the same year entered into a partnership with his brother in law, trading as Covens and Mortier until 1778; then as J. Covens & Son until 1794 and subsequently as Mortier, Covens & son until the mid nineteenth century
