Guthrie, William

William Guthrie (1708-1770) was a Scottish historian, writer and journalist. He developed a reputation as a political writer, covering Parliamentary debates for the Gentleman's Magazine; his reports were revised by Samuel Johnson. He published several historical works, most notably "A New Geographical, Historical, and Commercial Grammar" in 23 editions published between 1770 and 1800 in London, Dublin & Montrose (as well as being translated into French in 1801), and "A new system of modern geography" (6 editions published in his name from 1780-1795), both of which titles included a number of maps.
