CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Chart and Plan of the Harbour of New York & the Couny. Adjacent, from Sandy Hook to Kingsbridge, Comprehending the Whole of New York and Staten Islands, and Part of Long Island & the Jersey Shore: And shewing the Defences of New York Both by Land and Sea.'

A scarce Revolutionary War era map of New York harbor and approaches, published in London shortly after Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown, which had left New York as the last British stronghold in what is now the United States. The accompanying text, which includes a description of the city, commences "Contains the whole of New York and Staten Islands, part of Long Island, and the Jersey shore, and shews the defences of New York, both by Land and Water; it also comprehends, the Field of Battle of Flatbush or Brooklyn; and all the operations, Military or Naval, that have happened in the neighbourhood of New York, during the American Rebellion, may be traced on it. As this spot is our Principal Station, and our Chief Strong hold in America, as it has been for these three last years blocked up on the Land Side by the Rebels, and as it was very lately threatened with a siege by them and their Allies the French; it has become an object of most Capital concern: Therefore to present it to our readers upon Paper, and to give its defences, may serve in a great Measure to satisfy the Curiosity of those, who have never seen the place itself."
