'Riberalta on the River Beni, the former rubber capital of tropical Bolivia. There was a time, not so long ago, when the price of rubber was very high. Everybody in the land dreamt of rubber. Adventurers from all corners of the world poured to the rubber regions around Riberalta. The price of rubber went up and up. Man there was ruled by lust of money and quick gain. Everything was paid for with gold, nobody asked for the price of anything. This orgy lasted for a few years only, then the reaction set in. Rubber plantations were started in India and this proved be the death of the glorious rubber times of Bolivia. One bankrupcy followed another, people began to move away. But a few remained there in the hope that price of rubber would go up again; but their hopes were vain, they went from bad to worse and in the end were driven to utter misery. And nowadays one meets these dethroned rubber kings throughout the entire Beni Land and with great feelings and sadness they tell tales of those glorious times of bygone days' by Roberto Gerstmann (1928).
