Gentleman's Magazine

The Gentleman’s Magazine was founded in London in 1731 by Edward Cave under the pseudonym Sylvanus Urban. It was the first periodical to call itself a "magazine" and played a pioneering role in English journalism. Published monthly for over 170 years until 1907, it offered a wide-ranging mix of news reports, literary essays, poetry, historical articles, and engraved maps and plates. The magazine is especially renowned for its detailed and timely maps of the American Revolutionary War, as well as coverage of other major conflicts such as the Seven Years' War, Napoleonic Wars, and colonial campaigns. Its maps, often engraved by leading cartographers of the time, remain highly prized by collectors today. With contributions from figures like Samuel Johnson, the magazine provides a rich and invaluable record of 18th- and 19th-century British intellectual, political, and imperial life.
