Johnson, Alvin Jewett
Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884), also known as A.J. Johnson, published Johnson's Family Atlases in New York between 1860 and 1887. These atlases were published variously under his name alone or with Browning (1860–62) and Ward (1862-1866). The various editions include a fascinating sequence of atlas maps which document the territorial expansion and consolidation of the United States westward during this quarter century, showing the step-by-step expansion of railroads and the development of new states, counties and towns, particularly in the trans-Mississippi west.
