Large Scale Ordnance Atlas - British Isles
George Bacon’s New Large Scale Ordnance Atlas of the British Isles, published in London in at least three editions between 1883 and 1885, was a substantial and highly detailed atlas drawing on the authoritative mapping of the Ordnance Survey. Issued by George W. Bacon, a prominent map publisher, the atlas featured large-scale coloured maps of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and their counties, together with large detailed plans of the major British cities, which are particularly prized today. Designed for both practical use and reference, it showcased the growing precision of late Victorian cartography, including railways, roads, parish boundaries, and topographical features. Its clarity, scale, and accessibility made it a popular household and professional reference, and it remains valued today for its rich depiction of the British landscape during a time of industrial and infrastructural expansion. The atlas was re-issued in the 1890s under different titles.
