The story of the Underground map, from Stingemore's pocket plans to Harry Beck's schematic diagram and beyond, can be followed through these sheets of the London Transport diagram of lines. Stingemore's plans of the late 1920s and early 1930s came before the first diagram from Beck's design in 1933, which put the connections between stations ahead of their true distances and gave passengers a guide quite unlike an ordinary street map of London. Later material includes Paul Garbutt's diagrams, sheets marking the opening of the Jubilee line in 1979 and versions with fare-zone information on the reverse, following the network's extensions and changing designs into the twenty-first century.
