Nicholls, colour reproductions of his paintings for early twentieth-century travel books, among them G. E. Mitton's Cornwall, published by A. & C. Black in 1915. In Cornwall he follows fishing boats, ferries and cliffs from Fowey and Polperro to Newlyn, Kynance Cove and Land's End. Inland, he turns to market halls, church porches, village crosses and stone houses at Burford, Chipping Campden, Broadway and the Slaughters, with harvest fields, orchards and sheep pastures beyond the street. The plates keep the painter's light and atmosphere rather than the literalness of a photograph.
