Pugin, Augustus Welby Northmore
Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812–1852) was a pivotal figure in the Gothic Revival movement, known for his architectural designs, polemical writings, and influential book illustrations. While best known for his architectural work—including key contributions to the interior design of the Palace of Westminster—Pugin also produced a significant body of engraved illustrations. These include around 200 views for Paris and Its Environs, published by Robert Jennings and later by Robert Jennings & William Chaplin, showcasing Gothic and medieval architecture in France. He also illustrated A History of the University of Oxford and contributed to Ackermann’s History of the Colleges and Schools, producing highly detailed plates that reflect his passion for ecclesiastical and academic architecture. His collaborations with publishers like R. Jennings underline his impact not just as an architect but as a leading visual chronicler of 19th-century architectural heritage.
