Roads of Ireland
Taylor and Skinner’s Maps of the Roads of Ireland, surveyed in 1777 and published on 14th November 1778, was the first systematic road atlas of Ireland, modelled on the earlier success of their Roads of North Britain or Scotland (1776). It was sold by G. Nicol (Strand) and I. Murray (Fleet Street) in London, and W. Wilson, No. 6 Dame Street, Dublin. The atlas contains 288 strip maps arranged in itinerary form, engraved with mile markers, road junctions, towns, rivers, and notable estates, each accompanied by detailed route descriptions. It provided essential information for travellers, mail services, and the military, and remains a key resource for understanding 18th-century Irish transport infrastructure. Renowned for both its precision and decorative appeal, it stands as a milestone in Irish cartography.
