The British Atlas
The British Atlas by Cole and Roper (London: Vernor, Hood & Sharpe, 1810) is one of the most interesting early 19th-century atlases of the British Isles, covering all the counties of England and Wales along with finely engraved plans of the principal towns, for which it is particularly valued. The atlas offers a vivid snapshot of Britain during the early Industrial Revolution: several of the county maps mark collieries, mines, and canals, while some of the the urban plans depict textile mills, foundries, and other emerging industrial landmarks. Almost all of the maps are engraved by J. Roper from drawings by G. Cole. The county maps are elegantly hand-coloured in the Georgian style.
