Americana leads this week: Read more

Americana leads this week: the Republic of Texas, the road to California and Newport before the Gilded Age. An 1844 map shows Texas independent and California still Mexican. Two years later came war, and William Emory’s survey followed the Army of the West to the Pacific, recording San Diego under the American flag and the Battle of Los Angeles. Beers’s 1870 atlas of Rhode Island names Newport’s property owners from the wharves to August Belmont’s estate on Bellevue Avenue, and runs on to the mills of Pawtucket and Providence’s nine wards. Across the Atlantic, late-Victorian tourist maps run from Harrogate to Killarney and the Isle of Man, while Tallis’s Great Exhibition souvenir map of London shows the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park. Counted by night, the City of London looked like a shrinking parish, so in 1891 it held its own Day-Census. Finally, the SDUK’s beautiful star charts of 1847 picture the constellations.
