A Map of the Kingdom of Poland describing its ancient limits… Wyld 1843
SKU: P-8-006179
'A Map of the Kingdom of Poland, describing its ancient limits with the dismemberments; likewise its present boundary as settled by Act of Congress at Vienna // Warzsawa or Warsaw'
A map illustrating the continuing partition of Poland as settled by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, which failed to restore Poland as an independent kingdom and instead divided it in a compromise that suited the major powers while suppressing Polish national aspirations. The largest share formed the Kingdom of Poland (Congress Poland), a constitutional monarchy in personal union with the Russian Empire under Tsar Alexander I, who assumed the title “King of Poland.” Though granted a constitution and limited autonomy, it was effectively under Russian control, with freedoms steadily curtailed. Austria retained Galicia from the earlier partitions, Prussia received the Grand Duchy of Posen, and Kraków was designated a small Free City under joint Russian, Austrian, and Prussian protection. This settlement left Poland partitioned and dependent, with its historic borders outlined here, and sowed the seeds of later uprisings against Russian rule. At the foot of the map is an inset plan of Warsaw together with statistical tables recording the population of the ancient kingdom by religion and language.
