'A Pictorial Map of Florida'
A whimsical 1951 pictorial map of Florida drawn & illustrated by George D. Way. The map illustrates Florida's natural resources, wildlife and tourist attractions. It features a compass rose depicting a Florida Marlin with its spear piercing the North. The map predates many of the attractions for which Florida is best known today including Walt Disney World (opened 1971), and the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral (from where the first rocket was launched in 1950, but it is not marked on the map). Featured on the map are popular coastal destinations such as Daytona Beach, Miami, and many others; Landmarks include the Seminole Indian Reservation, the Mountain Lake Singing Tower, Lake Okeechoree, Allen's Reptile Institute, and many more. On the left hand side is a promotional pitch by Nathan Mayo, the state's longest serving agricultural commissioner (1923-1960). The verso features a road map of the state with mileage chart and population chart divided by town or city from the 1950 census. This map also retains its original fold lines.
