Africa Juxta Navigationes et Observationes Recentissimas Aucta correcta et in sua Regna et Status divisa in lucern edita a Matth. Seutt. S.C.M. Geogr. Aug. Vind. Cum Privileg: Sac. Rom:Imp. Vicariat. [Africa enlarged and corrected according to the most recent voyages and observations, divided into its kingdoms and states]
Antique 18th-century copperplate map of Africa by Matthäus Seutter. Original wash colour with a decorative title cartouche featuring trade scenes, exotic animals, and mythical African creatures, in Seutter’s distinctive Baroque style. The map portrays the entire African continent divided into its traditional kingdoms and regions, extending from Barbary and the Sahara to the Guinea Coast, Congo, Ethiopia, and the Cape, and includes the Madeira, Canary, and Madagascar islands. Based on reports from contemporary voyages, it emphasises Africa’s great river systems — the Nile, Niger, and Congo — which all originate from a vast mythical inland lake in Central Africa. The Niger River is shown flowing westward to the Atlantic near Cape Verde, while in the South Atlantic, the phantom island of San Matteo (St. Matthew’s Island) appears northeast of a mislocated Ascension Island, illustrating the enduring cartographic legends and speculative geography of the early Enlightenment era.
