Mr. Alderman Pickett's Plans for Public Improvement. [View of the north side of the Street from the East of Temple Bar. View of the North and South side from the West of St. Clement's Church
William Pickett was elected alderman of Cornhill Ward in 1783. In 1787, at the request of local traders, he campaigned for the removal of Temple Bar, but without success. However, Pickett succeeded with the street widening scheme shown, in the eastern end of the Strand around St Clement Danes. The resulting Pickett Street was only called for that name for a short while, before reverting to its traditional name of the Strand. Pickett's development was demolished in 1870 to make way for the Royal Courts of Justice.
