'The Isle of Thanet in Kent—North West Prospect of St. Mary Minster'
A finely engraved early-eighteenth-century map of the Isle of Thanet, originally published in John Harris’s History of Kent in 1719. The map shows the peninsula when it was still separated from the mainland by the Wantsum Channel, with Sandwich Haven and the River Stour carefully delineated. Towns, villages, churches, windmills, roads, and ferries are depicted pictorially, with Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs clearly identified. Coastal features, navigation routes, and offshore shipping are shown, reflecting the island’s maritime importance. An inset view at lower left presents a north-west prospect of St Mary Minster. Engraved in a clear and attractive style, the map combines topographical accuracy with decorative charm and provides a valuable record of Thanet’s historic landscape before the silting of the Wantsum.
