'The Balkan States: With New Frontiers according to Treaties of London, Constantinople, & Bukharest'
The map of the settlement that caused the First World War, published just weeks before the war began. Bartholomew records the three treaties of 1913 in colour, with acquisitions of new territory in darker tints, so the redistribution reads at a glance: Serbia driving south into Kosovo and Macedonia, Greece advancing to Salonica, Romania taking Southern Dobruja, Bulgaria left with a thin share of Macedonia and Western Thrace, and the Ottoman frontier pulled back to Adrianople and Constantinople. Those darker tints on Serbia are the crux. A kingdom doubled in size became a magnet for the South Slavs under Habsburg rule, and convinced Vienna that Belgrade must be defeated. The assassination of Archdue Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, just weeks later in June 1914 supplied the spark. The motive is printed here.
