A scarce and exceptionally early French plan of the Battle of Waterloo, published within months of the campaign and attributed to Captain Salucci, Adjutant to the General Staff. The large engraved plan records the opposing French, British and Prussian positions in contemporary hand colour around Mont St Jean, Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte and Plancenoit, accompanied by extensive explanatory text describing the course of one of history's most decisive battles. Contemporary separately published Waterloo plans of this scale are seldom encountered, and examples of this issue appear to have been almost absent from the market in recent decades. Institutional holdings include the Royal Museums Greenwich, where a complete example is preserved. Condition: The original hinged papier de retombe (overlay) is lacking, with evidence of its former attachment remaining. General age-toning, surface soiling and staining, old folds and handling creases, rough margins with tears and small losses, and a long neatly restored tear; nevertheless, the engraved map and explanatory text remain substantially complete.
