[Carrickfergus Lough]. Inset: A prospect of Carreck-Fergus, being the place where King William landed in Ireland - To the most Potent and Heroick Prince William the III of Great Britain, France and Ireland; King, Defender of the Faith &c. This is most humbly dedicated and presented by Your Majes. Most dutifull and Loyall subject and servant Capt. G. Collins
This decorative navigation chart shows Belfast Lough (previously known as Carrickfergus Bay or Carrickfergus Lough), and adjacent coastline. It is dedicated to King William III 'Defender of the Faith', and shows the Lough at the time of the King's landing in Ireland in 1690, prior to the Battle of the Boyne, during the Williamite Wars. The location of the landing of the King himself in Carrickfergus is marked, along with that of his army further up the coast, and that of the Duke of Schomberg in Bangor a year earlier in 1689. The vignette view inset top left depicts Carrickfergus Castle and the King going ashore. The many bonfires which were lit on the hills of counties Antrim and Down to help Williamite ships navigate through Belfast Lough at night are indicated, an event now remembered annually on 'Eleventh Night', the 11th July. The towns of Belfast, Bangor, Holywood & Carrickfergus are shown.
