'Bouvet Island. Copies of Sketches from the Log of the “Sprightly”, Captain Norris'
A set of coastal profiles and a small chart of Bouvet Island, one of the most remote and inhospitable places on earth, copied from Admiralty records of the 19th-century sketches made by Captain George Norris aboard the sealer Sprightly. In 1825 Norris became the first person known to set foot on the island, claiming it for the British Crown and naming it Liverpool Island. He also reported a second landfall nearby—“Thompson Island”—later revealed to be a phantom island. These stark profiles capture Bouvet as it appeared to sealers and explorers battling the South Atlantic’s wildest seas, and stand as a fascinating survival of early polar maritime history, long before Norway laid its later claim to the island.
