Britain, Land of History tourist poster by Barry Evans. Mary Queen of Scots 1965
SKU: P-9-000962
'Britain - Land of History. Scotland's great castles and palaces are full of bitter-sweet memories of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) the most romantic, most tragic figure in British history'
A striking mid-century tourism poster featuring Mary, Queen of Scots (1542–1587) in vivid Renaissance dress, with Queen Elizabeth I in the background and David Rizzio, Mary’s secretary and lover, shown stabbed at her feet—an allusion to the notorious 1566 murder orchestrated by her jealous husband, Lord Darnley. Issued as part of the BTHA’s Britain: Land of History campaign, the poster celebrates Scotland’s romantic heritage, emphasising the “bitter-sweet memories” associated with Mary’s life. The design incorporates key sites from Mary’s story: Holyroodhouse, where Rizzio was murdered and where Mary spent significant periods of her reign; Edinburgh Castle, the fortress-symbol of her royal authority and Borthwick Castle, from which she famously escaped in disguise during the siege of 1567. Elizabeth’s presence underscores the rival queens’ fraught political relationship, which culminated in Mary’s long imprisonment and eventual execution. A richly atmospheric example of 1960s British travel advertising, blending historical drama with bold graphic design.
