British Guiana & the Schomburgk boundary—Venezuela border dispute—RGS 1880 map
SKU: P-6-111625
'Reduction of the map of British Guiana compiled from the surveys executed under Her Majesty's Commission from 1841-1844 and under the direction of The Royal Geographical Society from 1835 to 1839 by Sir Robert H. Schomburgk, revised and corrected to the present time by Cathcart Chalmers Esq., Crown Surveyor of the Colony and James Gay Sawkins, Director of the Geological Survey of the West Indies and British Guiana 1875'
A politically important map of British Guiana, based on Schomburgk’s surveys and later colonial revisions. Sir Robert Schomburgk’s work helped define the boundary geography later associated with the Schomburgk Line and the Venezuela–British Guiana dispute. This map is a powerful example of survey as sovereignty: rivers, mountains and interior routes transformed into colonial borders and legal claims. A strong Guyana map for collectors of South American boundary disputes, British colonial survey, Schomburgk, and the geography behind nineteenth-century international arbitration.
