'Plan of Freehold Property Canning Town. For Sale by Auction by Messrs. Hards & Bradly'
A colour-washed auction plan of freehold property in Canning Town, prepared by Hards & Bradly for an executors’ sale on 28 October 1892. Twelve numbered lots are distinguished around Bidder, Randall, Stephenson and New Streets, from houses to building land. The setting vividly records Victorian east London: the Great Eastern Railway borders the site, with directions to Canning Town station and Stratford; Canning Town Public Elementary School (West Ham Board School, opened 1877), the Dartmouth public house and Commercial Gas Company are named. It captures speculative housing pressed between railway, school and heavy industry during Canning Town’s rapid expansion. Contemporary manuscript additions heighten its documentary interest. The plan remains with its original annotated auction particulars and conditions, whose manuscript prices realised and other working notes preserve the sale’s outcome. Together they form an unusually complete documentary record of Victorian property, housing and industrial change in Canning Town.
