[Chart of compass variations and of the general winds found in the most frequented seas, drawn at the Depot of Marine Charts for the service of French ships, by order of Monsieur de Choiseul, Colonel General of the Swiss and Grisons, Minister of War and of the Navy, by Sr. Bellin, Engineer of the Navy, Royal Censor, member of the Academy of Marine and of the Royal Society of London, 1765.]
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin’s influential 1765 chart of global magnetic variation and prevailing winds, compiled at the Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine and dedicated to Étienne-François de Choiseul, then Minister of War and of the Navy and Colonel General of the elite Swiss and Grisons regiments serving the French crown. The map is richly embellished with cherubic wind heads, classical personifications of the dominant wind directions and monsoonal systems across the world’s most frequented seas, accompanied by magnetic declination lines and detailed explanatory text. One of Bellin’s most ambitious thematic sheets, it reflects mid-eighteenth-century French efforts to standardise global navigation and stands as a key work of the Dépôt’s scientific cartography.
