'Cheleken Oilfields Limited—Share Warrant to Bearer for Share of £1 Sterling'
Issued in 1913, this bearer share certificate from Cheleken Oilfields Limited reflects early British investment in Caspian petroleum. Four dividend coupons have been redeemed, likely representing annual payments from 1913 until distributions were halted by the Russian Revolution and the subsequent Bolshevik nationalisation of oil assets, which effectively ended the company’s operations and investor returns. The Cheleken (Çeleken) Peninsula, on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea in present-day Turkmenistan, was a recognised secondary oil district by the late 19th century, developing alongside the major Caspian fields around Baku. In the post-Soviet period, oil production in the region resumed under international concession agreements. Modern output from the Cheleken area and nearby offshore structures is associated with operators such as Dragon Oil, now part of the Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), continuing the peninsula’s long history as a producing oil province.
