'Chiang’s War'
Raymond Lufkin’s forceful scratchboard map was published in Fortune’s September 1941 issue. It distinguishes territory held by Japan from areas occupied by Chinese armies and guerrillas, and overlays roads, railways and rivers across the immense theatre stretching from Manchuria and the occupied coast to Chungking and Kunming. Japan’s control of coastal ports and key railway corridors is set against the fragmented but extensive resistance operating between them, while the mountainous interior makes the Nationalist government’s strategic depth immediately apparent. Published before the United States entered the Second World War, the map condensed four years of conflict into a lucid political and transport diagram. Its title and imagery reflect the contemporary American framing of Chiang Kai-shek’s war, while the detailed network records the geography of occupation and resistance.
