'Chipaya Indians in front of their house in the southern part of the Province of Carangas. This tribe is an ethnographic puzzle: its origin is unknown, its language has nothing in common with any other idiom of the South American continent and nobody seems to be able to solve the problem of the origin of these inhabitants of the salt desert. It is difficult to imagine harder conditions of life, than those in which these people live. The soil is saturated with salt and nothing grows there. The terrific wind blowing over the plain every afternoon, on almost every day of the year, freezes the blood in the veins of a stranger and makes life outside of an habitation impossible. The form of their abodes is in accordance with the climate: the round walls offer the least possible resistance to the wind and the doors are always on the east side of the hut, so that the rays of the morning sun can warm the inside of their poor homes'
