Luxembourg
A plan of the Fortress of Luxembourg, published in 1817, depicting the city during the French siege of 1794–95, when Republican forces sought to wrest the stronghold from its Habsburg defenders during the French Revolutionary Wars. Although the French army failed to storm the formidable defences, the garrison capitulated after more than seven months of blockade. Luxembourg’s protracted resistance prompted Lazare Carnot to describe it as “the best fortress in the world, except Gibraltar”, giving rise to its enduring sobriquet, “the Gibraltar of the North”. The city’s eventual fall cleared the way for France’s formal annexation of the Southern Netherlands (now Belgium) on 1 October 1795
