'City of London Local Plan—Proposals Map'
The Square Mile’s blueprint on the eve of Big Bang, this large 1:4,000 Proposals Map for the City of London Local Plan is also a map of London’s protected views, showing exactly where the City guarded its views of St Paul’s Cathedral. It plots the St Paul’s Heights, the height limits devised in the 1930s by the cathedral’s Surveyor to the Fabric, W. Godfrey Allen, to keep the dome visible from the streets and river; the strategic views of St Paul’s, protected view corridors crossing the City from distant viewpoints such as Parliament Hill, Primrose Hill and Richmond Park; and the protected views from the Monument. These policies still shape the London skyline today, now through the London View Management Framework, and here they are drawn street by street. Over a detailed Ordnance Survey base the map also marks highway-widening lines, the high-level walkways of the pedway network, a proposed riverside walk, conservation areas, the Temples and the Smithfield plan area, each keyed to the accompanying Written Statement, supplied with the map. It was deposited on 23 May 1986.
