Colonial Africa—after Brussels anti-slavery Conference 1890—Bolton 1895 map
SKU: P-6-112258
'Africa at the Close of the Brussels Conference, 1890'
A coloured political and treaty map showing Africa at the close of the Brussels Anti-Slavery Conference in 1890. It delineates colonial possessions and chartered-company territories while marking the slave-trade zone and controls on imports of arms and spirituous liquors. Prepared by John Bolton for Stanford’s Geographical Establishment and published in 1895. The conference’s General Act combined anti-slavery measures with controls useful to the expanding colonial powers. The map is therefore both a record of international regulation and a document of imperial governance; its boundaries represent European claims and administrative ambitions rather than an uncomplicated picture of African sovereignty.
