Plan de la Ville et du Port de Corfou [Plan of the City and Port of Corfu]
An evocative map to illustrate the siege of Corfu, one of the most consequential episodes in the struggle for control of the eastern Mediterranean during the French Revolutionary Wars. The formerly Venetian island was ceded to France in 1797, becoming a key outpost of French power in the Ionian Sea. In late 1798 a combined Russian and Ottoman fleet laid siege to the island, capturing the strategic islet of Vido in March 1799, bringing Corfu’s harbour under direct fire. Cut off and outmatched, the French capitulated soon after. The fall of Corfu ended French dominance in the Ionian Islands and led to the establishment of the Septinsular Republic under Russo-Ottoman protection — the first autonomous Greek polity of the modern era.
