'The County of Cumberland'
J. L. Carr’s pictorial miscellany map of the County of Cumberland (Cumbria), published from his home press at 27 Mill Dale Road, Kettering, in 1977. One of 777 sheets, this example is hand-initialled by Carr and numbered 494 in the edition. The map belongs to his celebrated series of county maps produced between 1966 and 1982, which are deliberately whimsical and non-navigational, designed to weave together local history, anecdote, notable figures, and folklore rather than provide practical geography. As with his other county maps, the Cumberland sheet reflects Carr’s highly personal vision of place and forms part of the distinctive body of work associated with the Quince Tree Press, now recognised as a singular contribution to post-war British pictorial cartography. This map was issued "In honour of the Silver Jubilee" of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Carr reproduces "Caxton's mark [which] commemorates his first English publication in 1477 and my last one 500 years later in 1977"
